January 19 - Georgia secedes from the Union.
January 26 - Louisiana secedes from the Union.
January 29 - Kansas is admitted to the Union as the 34th state.
February 8 - The Confederate States of America are formed.
February 9 - Jefferson Davis is elected President of the Confederate States of America.
February 13 - Abraham Lincoln is declared the President.
February 23 - Texas secedes from the Union.
March 9 - Confederate currency is authorized by the Confederate Government.
March 22 - The first U.S. nursing school is chartered.
April 10 - South Carolina forces fire upon Fort Sumter, and the Civil War begins.
April 15 - President Abraham Lincoln calls for 75,000 Union Army volunteers.
April 15 - President Lincoln declares a state of insurrection.
May 6 - Arkansas secedes from the Union.
May 8 - Richmond, Virginia is made the capital of the Confederacy.

September 14 - The first naval battle of the Civil War occurs between the Colorado and the Judah near Pensacola, Florida.
October 21 - Union troops suffer a great defeat at Ball's Bluff, Virginia.
October 24 - The first transcontinental telegram is sent.
November 1 - General Winfield Scott resigns as commander in chief of the Union armies and is succeeded by McClellan.
